ClickView

ClickView is a tool for schools that is used to capture and save TV programmes to show in classrooms.

Last summer about sixteen staff attended a one-hour in-house training session with a ClickView trainer. During the session we were introduced to ClickView's new web interface, ClickView 24-7, which allows all staff in a ClickView school to save and edit their own footage from any TV programme broadcast 'free to air' in the last two weeks. This footage is then available indefinitely (which I guess means as long as the school continues to subscribe to the service). You could take a two minute segment from a news bulletin, an entire one hour programme, or even create your own playlists comprised of different extracts of different programmes.

The footage you edit and save can be watched both in school and also anywhere else via the ClickView app used with a school login. All staff and students have school ClickView logins and over the next week or two we would like to make sure that everyone is able to log in, and that staff who want to edit programmes can do so. This means that, not only can staff quickly get to their own saved programmes on their iPads but, so can their students which opens up new possibilities for the flipped classroom!

"Watch this 20 minute extract of this History programme for your homework, make a note of anything you didn't understand and we will come back tomorrow and discuss it and....."

This is what ClickView looks like on an iPad:

You can also embed ClickView footage on SMO for all students to view which is great for students who don't have mobile devices (no charge left?) or when you want them to view the footage in a particular context.

There are other features that staff might be interested to know about, such as being able to upload your own videos into the school ClickView Library for wider viewing. You can also do this from the iPad app which means that if you have filmed a rehearsal or an experiment you can upload it easily into a space that is only accessible with a school login and which therefore perhaps gives more peace of mind than using YouTube. Do bear in mind that anything in our School ClickView Library is visible to anyone in our school with a ClickView login.

A few things worth mentioning are:

  • When you edit a programme and submit it to the library it has to be approved through by Damian before it actually appears in the School ClickView Library. However you can play programmes from your own workspace immediately (useful to know if you want to show something from today's breakfast news).
  • A great search function allows you to search the (spoken) text of all programmes to find your topic - useful for current affairs or if you can't remember which programme mentioned a particular topic.
  • There are programmes to buy inside ClickView. They are pricey except that the ones about Maths which are FREE!
  • ClickView Exchange allows schools to share content with other schools.
  • We are not using ClickView's signage tools (which you may notice on their website).

ClickView have a good range of instructional videos for teachers on their website which enable you to get going quickly. I have put links to these on our new ClickView page on SMO along with other links that might be helpful. If you have got any comments or suggestions or questions please visit and post and let's make use of this great tool.
